POTENZA GIANMARIA
Gianmaria Potenza (Venice 9/12/1936) studied art at the State Institute of Art in Venice under the illuminated figure of Wenter Giorgio Marini. Soon he created his own studio where there are various forms of art, from graffiti to painting on wood and velvet, the lacquer, ceramics, glass from the incision to the concrete and metal, sculpture, mosaic.
In all the activity of Potenza from the beginning we can see a tendency towards three-dimensionality even when operating table and overcoming the two-dimensionality appears to be achieved fully when he starts falling for the bronze. There is a process in the art of Potenza that leads from the flat surfaces to create an effect to be bas-relief or embossed, carving, digging, shaping the material so as to realize the effects of tactile movements that create the shapes and colors not only through the clever combination of materials, but also through subtle contrasts of light and shadow and projecting parts and falling. At first the effect is attenuated, but over time the artist will tend increasingly to draw out the shapes from the surface.
With picto-sculptures Potenza begins to produce works that emerge from the main wooden floor, then introduce other materials such as blown glass or mosaic always creating this extraordinary effect of breaking the surface. The picto-sculptures are already an advanced stage of this creative process that will lead to the interest of power structures which are increasingly imposed in the environment: he strength to reach the three-dimensional sculpture in the round, taking the bronze as the main material.
